Raising Attainment for Mathematics GCSE Resit students

28 JanuaryJan 2020 UTC

Raising Attainment for GCSE Resit Students Led by mathematics consultant Susan Okereke

This Work Group offers teachers and their departments nationally coordinated support to address the challenges of supporting resit students through the new GCSE.

We will explore, in depth, how to teach key topics to GCSE resit students to allow them to access difficult questions on the new GCSE exam, including proportion and multiplicative reasoning, algebraic understanding and area problem-solving.

We will also be considering:

  • The general challenges and changes to the new GCSE exam;
  • The research into successful resit teaching, where students have not engaged with mathematics education in the past, and how to change their story;
  • Revision and independent learning strategies specific to mathematics and based on robust evidence.

Who is this for?

All sixth forms or colleges wishing to begin or continue a programme of professional development to address the teaching and learning implications of the new curriculum and GCSE on resit students. Ideally, each school will send two members of department to maximise the impact of the professional development within the department.

This work group is appropriate for anyone teaching resit students, whether you are an experienced maths specialist or a non-maths specialist with little knowledge of the new specification.

What is involved?

  • 3 x 1-day
  • Gap tasks between the workshops to ensure participating teachers and departments are able to support each other in trying new strategies.
  • There will be an evaluation process focusing on the impact of strategies on pupils and the department.
