Free CPD for Headteachers interested in exploring flexible working

Free CPD for Headteachers interested in exploring flexible working

12 MarchMar 2020 10:00 - 13:00 UTC

Flexible working is new territory for many schools and Headteachers can be understandably cautious. However, the biggest single factor affecting pupil outcomes is effective teaching and flexible working is one way of solving recruitment and retention of effective teachers. The potential benefits include:

  • Increase in teacher retention at all levels.
  • Increase in applications for job vacancies.
  • Improvement in leadership understanding of timetabling opportunities.
  • Reduced spending on cover and supply teaching.
  • Reduced teacher absence.
  • Reduced requests for absence during term time.
  • Fewer vacancies.
  • Improved communication, accountability, trust, engagement and productivity: skills which improve with a healthy flexible working culture.

The most recent report on the subject from NFER confirms what we know anecdotally: that the likelihood of a school adopting flexible working practices for their staff is dependent on the viewpoint of the headteacher. In order to better understand the barriers and benefits of change, we are running a free pilot for headteachers. The aim is to explore the opportunities for flexible working in the context of their school. We will support them to produce an action plan which will immediately improve retention of effective teachers and save the school money.

We will provide:

  • Expert training on opportunities for flexibility in schools.
  • Case studies of schools where this is already working.
  • Expert advice on the opportunities for timetabling and the newest technologies available to assist with this.
  • A questionnaire for your staff and report of their responses.

We will require:

  • An audit of specific data about your school (e.g. spending on cover, recruitment, long-term vacancies, annual staff turnover, annual staff absence and sick leave)
  • Your presence at two, separate, 3-hour training sessions (1st: Thursday 12th March 10-1, North Greenwich, 2nd: TBC)
  • Follow up once the pilot is complete: May 2020, December 2020 and May 2021.

Raring to go? Sign up and complete the audit.
